This year has been a very special year for us as we celebrate our 15th Birthday. In 1995 the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God took over the lease of the Digswell Nursery site from Welwyn Hatfield council. The site was very run down and in need of massive development and renovation. So with enthusiasm, hard work, creativity and little money the team has spent the last 15 years building and developing the site into the beautiful setting it is today. To celebrate such a special event we held a Community Day on Saturday 22 May 2010. The aim was to bring together the other support services provided locally by Saint John of God Hospitaller Services and the partners of Digswell Nurseries to hold a very special birthday party for all to enjoy.
Events ranged from tombolas to face painting, cake stalls to arts and crafts, holistic therapy to beat the goalie, to name but a few. Everyone came out in the blazing sun to help make the day truly special. A barbeque was provided by the local scouts, the local police and fire services came along as did our local school, Lakeside, for children with special needs. All the fun of the day was broadcast live across the county by our local radio station ‘JACK FM’. It was a day full of carnival spirit.
We opened at 11am and by 11.30 the car park was full and cars were parked outside on the main road as far as the eye could see. It was with the special skill of our operations manager, Robert, that so many cars could fit into our relatively small field! We hope to the build the nurseries into a really good community resource and our birthday party really showed the community support and spirit. Special thanks to the following groups for helping to make the day a really great success: Saint John of God Hospitaller Services: The Leisure, Education and Occupational Team (LEOS) Herts Supported Housing Team Enfield Supported Housing Team Taking Part Group Human Resources Department. Other organisations: Hertfordshire Constabulary Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Resolve Seetec Lakeside School – ‘The Crafty Swans’ The Explorers Barbeque Tina’s Cake stall Church Farm Natural Soap Stall Jack FM. And of course a massive thank you to all the team at Digswell Nurseries, students, volunteers and staff for working so very, very hard. As well as having thousands of plants to dib out, hanging baskets to make and a shop to restock, (just a few of the many jobs that need doing at this time of year), somebody thought they would add extra pressure by hosting a community day! Well done team! So, what shall we do next year? Watch this space….. Sue Beard, Head of Visitor Services and Development
